Law no. 6/91, of October 3, establishes the creation of the National Media Council (CNCS) in Guinea-Bissau. This independent body reports to the National People’s Assembly and its main duties are to ensure the exercise of the right to information and freedom of the press, to ensure the independence of the media from the political and economic powers, and to guarantee the pluralism and independence of the state media.
The CNCS is also responsible for guaranteeing the rights of airtime, reply and political rebuttal, as well as safeguarding the impartiality, accuracy and objectivity of the information disseminated.
The Council is responsible for making recommendations, arbitrating disputes, issuing opinions on the licensing of private channels and overseeing capital participation in media companies.
