This Code of Ethics for Journalists in Guinea-Bissau sets out an updated framework for ethical journalism, shaped by the changing realities and challenges facing the profession today. Revised from the 2018 Code, the document responds to developments in digital journalism, social media, disinformation and the safety of media professionals, while reinforcing professional integrity and responsible journalism.
The Code sets out principles such as truth and public interest, accuracy and verification, impartiality, independence, protection of sources, privacy and dignity, diversity and inclusion, and press freedom. It also addresses contemporary issues such as digital conduct, online harassment and hate speech, journalist safety, and the responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence in journalism.
The Code also provides journalists and media professionals with a shared reference for upholding ethical standards and strengthening public trust in journalism.
This document was produced within the framework of the 18-month media support project titled: “Promote and Protect Democracy by Safeguarding Freedom of Opinion and Expression and Combating Mis/Disinformation in Guinea-Bissau.”
