As part of the project “Monitoring Rights and Freedoms: empowering women and journalists in contexts of instability”, a training session was held on March 9, 2023 in the Casa dos Direitos meeting room on monitoring the informative and programmatic content of the national media.
The training was given by the consultant, Ivanildo Paulo Bodjam and assisted by the AMPROCS coordinator and technician, Paula Silva de Melo and Baducaram Imbenque, respectively.
The aforementioned training involved three monitors, media students Sérgia Nrani dos Santos, Plácido Cumeré and Djariatu Baldé, who for a month monitored the content produced by Guinean media outlets related to hate speech and the gender equality perspective.
During the training, the AMPROCS coordinator gave an overview of what the project aims to achieve and urged the monitors to make the most of the knowledge imparted by the trainer.
The following subjects were covered during the training:
- Hate speech concepts: how to identify hate speech?
- Gender equality in the media;
With regard to the concept of Hate Speech, the trainees had the opportunity to understand what elements define the phenomenon of hate speech:
- The promotion or encouragement of any form of hatred, humiliation or contempt as well as negative stereotypes, stigmatization and threats;
- Ideas that incite racial, social and religious discrimination;
- Insult;
- Humiliating and derogatory remarks against people because of their race, skin color, ethnicity, nationality, gender and religion;
- Offensive jokes;
- Slander;
- Defamation.

With regard to the issue of gender equality in the media, the monitors had a clear idea of how they were going to analyze female participation in the content produced by the media.
The monitors were satisfied with the training they received and committed themselves to fulfilling their obligations under the project.
Having said this, the consultant was responsible for dividing up the bodies selected for analysis over a period of thirty days.
Therefore, journalist Sérgia Nrani dos Santos was appointed to monitor the content of Rádio Jovem, Rádio Sol Mansi, Rádio Bombolom, Jornal o Democrata, Media digital Bissau Online and Voz do Povo.
Journalist Plácido Cumeré was awarded by Rádio África FM, Radio Popular, Jornal Última Hora, Agencia Noticiosa da Guiné, Media Digital TV Bantaba and Televisão da Guiné-Bissau.
And journalist Djariatu monitored Radio Nossa, Radio Cidade, Radio Capital FM, Jornal Nô Pintcha, Media Digital TV Obulum and Capital Online.
With regard to the Dictatorship of Consensus blog, there was no consensus, so much so that it was excluded from the list of bodies to be monitored.
The monitoring work ran from March 10 to April 10, 2023.
